History, Definition and Content, Types of Collections

    Istanbul Technical University was founded in 1773 during the reign of Sultan Mustafa III under the name Mühendishane-i Bahr-i Hümayun. The Istanbul Technical University Library dates back to 1795, when the Mühendishane-i Berri-i Hümayun was founded. Books printed at the printing house established in 1797 form the basis of today's library collection.

Today, our library provides fully equipped services with a total of 7 libraries, including 1 central library and 6 branches across 5 locations.

Millions of printed and electronic resources are available for research in the fields of engineering, architecture, natural sciences, and social sciences.

The collection consists of many types of printed and electronic publications, including books, journals, theses, audiovisual materials, maps, works of art, conference proceedings, standards, reference sources, and digitized collections.

Central and Branch Library Hours

The Mustafa İnan Library is open 24/7. Branch library hours vary. You can choose the library closest and most convenient to you for studying or conducting your research. Please check the branch library hours!

 

You need your ITU ID to enter the libraries. Don't forget to bring your card!

How to Create a Library Account?

To use our libraries, you must first create a library membership account.

Go to www.library.itu.edu.tr ;

1.    Select “Membership and PIN.”

2.    Select “Apply with ITU Account” and register using your institutional email information.

3.    Your application will be reviewed within three business days, and account opening information will be sent to your email.

4.    After your membership is confirmed, create a PIN for your Library Account using the PIN field on the same page, following the instructions provided.

Accessing Library Resources

Over 1 million electronic and printed resources are waiting for you to discover.

tarıyorum:  This is the library search engine that allows you to search the entire library collection. You can access both printed resources by searching their current shelf locations and electronic resources by searching their publication content from this area.

catalog search:  Where is a publication located in our libraries? Which center? Which shelf? Using your selected search criteria (author, title, subject, keyword, etc.), it directs you to the publication's catalog record. 

databases:  Hundreds of databases covering a wide variety of subjects are freely available for online full-text research. This collection, designed to meet all your information needs, has been carefully selected and made available to you through years of hard work and dedication.


Loans:

The purpose is to ensure and monitor the circulation of publications within and outside the library according to specific rules. This way, our valued students can benefit from our resources under equal rights. You can learn all the details about how to use the loans service, how long you can borrow publications, and how many publications you can borrow from the information on the relevant page.

Holds:

If the book you wish to borrow is currently checked out by another user, you can reserve it by placing a hold on it. To do so:

1.    Access the book's record by searching the catalog,

2.    Click the “Request” button located at the top of the record,

3.    Complete your hold by entering your user information.

After this process, the book will be called back to the library at the end of the loan period, and a notification will be sent to your email address once it has been returned to the library.

You can use reference services for all the information you need while doing your homework or research.

Our reference services cover all educational and research activities provided to enable users to effectively benefit from information sources and the services offered by the library. The Reference Desk is located on the ground floor of the Mustafa İnan Library.

Document Copying (scanner)

You can scan pages you wish to print for free using the scanner machines located on all floors of our library. Photocopying services are not provided.
